The creators of the show continue to bring back some well-loved characters from seasons past, including Ellen Harvelle, played by Samantha Ferris (pictured above), who was the indomitable landlady of the hunters' roadhouse in season two.
Ferris is a Canadian actress whose credits include The 4400, Smallville and The L-Word.
Ellen was seen trying to prevent the escape of all the demons from hell when the older Winchester brother, Dean (Jensen Ackles), resurrected his younger brother, Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) and caused the Devil's Gate to open heralding the arrival of the apocalypse - to be played out this forthcoming season.
Ellen will be one of the show's rare characters to be brought back without having to be resurrected first!
Another beloved character to make a return journey on the Supernatural gravy train is the prophet Chuck, also known as Carver Edlund, who apart from a brief appearance in the season four finale, only really featured in one episode, The Monster at the End of the Book. However, as he seems capable of predicting what turn the brothers' chaotic exisitence will take next, he may prove to be a handy ally.
We have also gleaned some interesting tidbits from insiders on the set as to the possible storylines for the first three episodes of season five.
Episode titles are: Sympathy for the Devil, Good God, y'all, and Free to Be You and Me.
Among the casting calls that the show has sent out are requests for a mid-30s mechanic type to be posessed by the archangel Rafael who, it has been hinted, is 'capable of harm'.
We can also expect to see a barmaid and former addict going by the name of Lindsey in her mid-20s who is expected to relate to Sam and his demon blood addiction.
Finally, we will be introduced to another hunter going by the name of Tim Janklow who starts out world-weary but is expected to take a dive off the deep end pretty smartly.
